important thing is how the investigation is expanding. we went to bed, thinking the f.b.i. investigation ended and then we hear the f.b.i. was going back to broadwell's house, paula broadwell's house, petraeus' mistress in north carolina. we don't know what that is all about. then we hear shortly after that, that general john allen, the top u.s. commander in afghanistan, who was here in washington preparing for his confirmation hearings for his next job at the supreme allied commanderrer in europe, the confirmation hearings are on hold and he is now implicated in this controversy, because of 30,000 pages of e-mails to jill kelly, who is the woman who launched this investigation. so it really keeps unraveling. it's like an onion you keep rolling back. we also need to look at the contentious custody battle that jill kelly's sister was involved in. we now understand that petraeus and allen both wrote letters o, asking the judge to show leniency to kelly's sister. was there undue influence used by the two men for these wome women? and was there, were there any laws broken? it just keeps gett

the fbi on paula broadwell. >> that's right. this is another bizarre twist. the fbi agent you just mentioned has now been removed from sending revealing pictures of himself to that whistle-blower. the scandal is growing. and it's resolving around the actions of paula broadwell. it really is just one day, more stories leaking out. we'll try to clear it all up for you. >> it just continues to mushroom. our senior affairs correspondent martha raddatz starts out our full coverage from washington. she's been reporting on both generals for a decade. martha, this was stunning news after midnight. >> reporter: it's true. the scandal is more stunning every day. now, under investigation, the commander who replaced david petraeus in afghanistan, marine corps general john allen, who has apparently been exchanging e-mails with the woman at the center of the petraeus affair. this morning, the fbi probe into david petraeus' affair appears to have also ensnared his successor in afghanistan. the pentagon has now launched an investigation into, quote, potentially inappropriate e-mails between genera
the fbi, which traced those e-mails back to the computer of paula broadwell, where they discovered the evidence of broadwell's affair with petraeus. broadwell, seen tonight at her brother's home in washington, sipping wine and having dinner, admitted her affair with petraeus but has not commented on her e-mails she allegedly sent to the other woman, jill kelly. there is more, abc news learned that general allen received an anonymous e-mail traced to broadwell, claiming jill kelly was a seductress. a further look by the fbi into kelly's e-mails revealed hundreds between kelly and allen. 20,000 to 30,000 pages of communication in all. secretary of defense leon panetta put general allen's promotion to nato supreme commander on hold and ordered a full investigation of the allen/kelly relationship. >> today, the secretary directed the matter be referred to the inspector general of the department of defense for investigation. >> reporter: jill kelly spent the day at her home in tampa not answering questions. in the background, a television could be seen with news coverage of the payton p
surfaced that you -- that somehow you got information and you passed it on to the fbi director. what happened? >> well, you know, i was contacted by an individual in the fbi who i have never met, i didn't know. he offered information to me that gave me pause and a cause for alarm. i had no way to corroborate the information. and certainly, the information to me... gave rise to the possibility that there was a national security issues that perhaps our cia director was vulnerable. but i couldn't corroborate or substantiate the information that was given to me. we were about 10 days or a few weeks out before the election. and i didn't want to politicize it, i wanted to make sure that national security wasn't at risk. so i turned to the person and the entity that i felt best equipped to deal with that information, to get to the bottom of it. and this was the fbi director and his office, that we know has an obligation to make sure that our national security is the priority. and the fbi's also obligated to apprise congress if there is a need for or an ongoing investigation or if there is a
